Data Management

Having access to accurately mapped submarine cable routes has become essential following the increase in seabed usage from industries such as telecoms, renewable energy, oil & gas and resource mining.

CABLE RECORDS MANAGEMENT

Enabling improved decision-making for the long-term integrity of an asset

Throughout each stage of the planning, installation and operation of a submarine cable, project data is created and collected.

This data remains in a state of flux, with several changes over the project’s lifecycle which must be continually captured. Our knowledgeable team update individual records with new cable or pipeline crossings, repair details or other relevant marine operations – taking the burden away from our clients to do so.

OceanIQ has a wealth of experience in this field and manage records for over 150,000kms of in-service cable systems. Our team has a combined experience of over 60 years of managing cable records for this industry.

In the event of a cable repair or other remedial work required on the cable, cable owners can rely on these records being up to date and accurate, to enable the very best decision-making.

Standardised formats and strict document control to retain the most accurate and up-to-date data for the following records:

  • Route position lists (RPLs)
  • Straight line diagrams (SLDs)
  • Installation charts
  • Cable fibre maps
  • Chromatic dispersion management
  • GIS databases
  • Cable awareness charts
  • Bespoke webpage with restricted access for cable owners and project managers
  • Liaising with authorities for periodical updates

CHARTING SERVICES

Protecting cables by minimising unexpected human intervention

There are almost 200 faults on submarine fibre optic cables annually, and 74% of those are caused by accidental third party activity such as fishing, anchoring, dredging or other marine user intervention.

Sharing seabed data with the relevant authorities in the form of cable awareness charts or flyers can help minimise that figure, ensuring other marine users are aware of the location of these important assets to avoid damaging them.

OceanIQ can either produce individual cable awareness charts for issue by the client or post them on a dedicated website.  Please click here to view one of our cable awareness sites.

Customised GIS, custom cable charts, and installation chart updating are available to support the following:

  • Survey data from CAD based survey charts
  • Route engineering
  • Burial verification surveys
  • Integration of legacy data into a customised GIS GeoCable® format
  • Production of installation north-up and alignment sheets, burial graphs
  • Overview/location maps
  • Planning charts
  • Route position lists and cable crossing lists
  • Landing site diagrams
  • Seismic activity charts
  • International territorial boundary charts
  • Geo-referencing of aerial photographs and satellite images

Determining reliable cable ampacities for marine high voltage cables.

Determining reliable cable ampacities for marine High Voltage Cables is currently the subject of significant industry and academic reassessment in order to optimise the operation (ampacity), design (cross-sectional area) and subsequent efficiency, longevity, CAPEX and profitability of both submarine power cables and their dependencies (Enescu et...
