Tackling seabed challenges to provide robust cable engineering solutions

For any submarine cable project system security is important. To achieve this, it is essential to ensure that the cable is well protected from external interaction with fishing gear, anchors and prevent cable abrasion. Assessment of these risk factors relies on key geotechnical survey information. Our experienced team works collaboratively with leading industry experts to provide recommendations that address cable protection concerns, and present solutions.

Our Geotechnical experts skilfully analyse a wealth of data to convert facts & figures into meaningful intelligence. We use seabed sediment strength and profile data, along with knowledge of the local marine activity to carry out Cable Burial Risk Assessments (CBRA). We also use similar data, along with the capabilities of various cable burial tools to carry out Burial Assessment Studies (BAS).

Local Metocean data is used for waves and currents, along with the geotechnical data to determine how stable cables will be if left at the surface through On-Bottom Stability assessments (OBS) and from this we make informed decisions on the abrasion risks the cables face. These numerous studies lead to our work in determining the appropriate cable protection solution for each cable. This enables our clients to make informed decisions and minimises the risk of damage to their assets over their design life.

We have provided the following services through a subcontractor on recent projects:

Telecoms Project – UK

BAS and OBS carried out externally but managed and integrated into the overall engineering by OiQ while its CBRA were executed internally

Power Project – Scotland

BAS, OBS and were all undertaken externally but managed and integrated into the overall engineering by OiQ

Power Project – Scotland

BAS and CBRA done externally but managed and integrated into the overall engineering by OiQ while its OBS were undertaken internally.

Telecoms Project – Scotland

BAS and OBS carried out externally but managed and integrated into the overall engineering by OiQ. In this instance, no CBRA was carried out since, it was not required.

Determining reliable cable ampacities for marine high voltage cables.

Determining reliable cable ampacities for marine High Voltage Cables is currently the subject of significant industry and academic reassessment in order to optimise the operation (ampacity), design (cross-sectional area) and subsequent efficiency, longevity, CAPEX and profitability of both submarine power cables and their dependencies (Enescu et...
