Before a survey starts, OceanIQ can use any previously collected GIS and survey data to optimise a cable route based on known project details such as the intended installation methodology, the cable types proposed and any other routeing constraints or influences. This is often termed Macro Routeing.
Most cable route surveys will assess and revise the route as the survey progresses based on the very early survey deliverables. This is the process of taking the early survey results from the full survey corridor and producing what is known as the In Field Selected Route (IFSR).

This cable route engineering work can continue after the survey ends, and is often an iterative process where details discovered during the survey are used to modify the route, this may be further refined once the full survey interpretation and reporting is available.
The route engineering work carried out during and after the survey is completed is often termed Micro Routeing.
