UK-ICELAND HVDC Interconnector

Desk Top Study

The Project

A Desk Top Study with research into all the geohazards, human hazards, constraints and influences over the routing of an HVDC submarine interconnector cable between Iceland and the UK.

Research to determine project permitting requirements and local marine activities. The study provided a route position list (RPL), straight line diagram (SLD), and information on the quantity of cable required to complete the project, a route suitable for a marine survey and information on the specific marine survey, cable installation and cable maintenance requirements for a cable in this region.

Makai Ocean Engineering provided specialist engineering consultancy on deployment depth and recovery, tension calculations and cable catenary. The study also considered power cable vessel capacities and availability. This was particularly important since the route crossed a relatively deep water environment for a power cable.

Hydrothermal Vents

Hydrothermal vents are commonplace along mid-ocean ridges and hotspots. Vents are fractures on the seafloor that allow the transfer of energy and minerals through a hydrothermal system consisting of porous rocks or pre-existing planes of weakness, before being ejected into the water column.

Transform (Conservative) Boundaries

Earthquakes are commonplace along transform boundaries. Earthquakes can cause several hazards to cable routes: liquefaction can occur in seafloor sediments causing the cable to be buried deeper or exposing it at the surface; movement of sediment in landslides can damage the cable as deposition occurs; landslides...
